Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps?

By Humfrid ·

The short answerSearch your business name and city on Google Maps first. If nothing comes up, it's usually a fixable profile problem: not verified, suspended, an edit still in review, or a duplicate. If you show up for your name but not for searches like "plumber near me," you're being outranked. What helps there is a complete profile, real reviews, and your own website, which Google draws business info from. Text Humfrid, and it builds that website within a day and helps you keep your profile complete.

When someone searches for a business near them, Google says they’ll find local results on Google Maps and Search, and that it tries to show customers the kind of nearby business they’d like to visit. If you’re not in those results, the call goes to someone who is. Most of the reasons are fixable, and Humfrid helps with the ones that come down to your information: it helps you set up your profile and keep it complete, and builds the website Google draws business info from.

Is my business missing, or just not near the top?

Find out first, because the fix is different. Open Google Maps and search your exact business name plus your city, which is the test Google’s own help page suggests.

If your profile comes up, you aren’t missing. You’re being outranked for searches like “plumber” or “coffee” nearby, so skip to the ranking section below. If nothing comes up even for your name, work through the checks in order.

Give a new profile time, too. Google says rankings for new businesses can take up to a month to appear in search results.

Is my Business Profile verified?

Check this first. Google is blunt about it: only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search.

Google picks the method, such as a code by phone or text, an email, a video or a postcard. Reviews take up to 5 business days, and sometimes longer. If verification is pending, wait for it and don’t start a second profile.

Your own website can help here. Google says that in some cases it verifies a profile instantly, and one of those cases is when you verify your website with Google Search Console.

How Humfrid does this for you

Most checks in this post are about your profile. Humfrid helps with what sits behind it: it builds your website by text and keeps it current. Text your business name, answer a few questions, and it’s live within a day, with your services, the towns you cover, and the same name, phone and hours as your Google Business Profile. Nothing goes live without your OK.

After that, you text changes like these:

  • “We’re closed Thanksgiving through Sunday.”
  • “Add water heater installs.”
  • “We cover Redwood City now.”

Humfrid updates your website, helps you set up your Google Business Profile and keep it complete, and writes posts and review replies for your profile. You post them, because you run your own profile. Every plan sets your website up to be found on Google, Google Maps, ChatGPT and other AI answers. No one can promise a ranking, and Humfrid won’t. You can see your website free for 14 days, with no setup fee and no contract, and you keep your phone number.

Has my profile been suspended or disabled?

Possibly, if it broke one of Google’s rules. Google says that if a profile violates our guidelines, it becomes disabled or suspended, and it won’t show to other people until you fix the issue.

Check your business name first. It should reflect your business’s real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery. Extra words like a city or a list of services aren’t allowed.

Fix anything your profile breaks. Then appeal in Google’s appeals tool, signed in to the same account, with evidence such as a business registration, a license, a tax certificate or a utility bill showing the same name and address. Don’t create a new profile for the same business.

Take your time on the appeal. Google says appeals can only be submitted once, though after a denial you can ask for another review with new evidence.

Did I just change something?

A recent edit may still be in review. Google says edits usually take up to 10 minutes to review, but sometimes it can take up to 30 days. Each edit shows as Accepted, Pending or Not approved.

If you add or change a category, you might be asked to verify your business again. Make big changes one at a time.

Could there be two profiles for my business?

Yes, and it can hide you. Google allows only one Business Profile for each business, and if a profile is considered a duplicate, it won’t show on Google Search or Maps.

Remove a second one made by mistake; that won’t affect your verified listing. If you moved, update the address on your existing profile.

I work from home and hid my address. Is that the reason?

Hiding it is correct, so keep it hidden. Google says a service-area business should hide your business address from customers.

Check your service areas instead. You can set up to 20 service areas, and the whole area shouldn’t stretch past about 2 hours of driving from where you’re based. Make sure the towns you’re testing from are on the list, and name the same towns on your website. With Humfrid, that’s one text.

Is my business eligible for Google Maps at all?

Check this if nothing else fits. Google says a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours. Online-only businesses aren’t eligible, and neither is an address that is a P.O. box or mailbox in a remote location. If that’s you, your own website is what carries your business on Google.

Why do I show up for my name but not for “near me” searches?

Because a name search and a category search are different contests. For a search like “dog groomer,” Google weighs three things. Relevance is how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for, distance is how far you are from the person searching, and prominence means how well-known a business is.

You can’t change distance, but you can work on the other two. Google says businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results, and that prominence is based partly on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. Your category counts as well: Google says the categories you select affect your local ranking on Google. Pick the most specific one that fits.

There is no shortcut. Google states that there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.

Does my own website help me show up on Google Maps?

Yes, in ways Google spells out. Your profile isn’t built only from what you type into it. Google says profile information is compiled from several sources, including crawled web content (e.g., information from a business’ official website). A website that lists your services, your towns and your hours gives Google more to match you to the right searches. Humfrid puts all of that on your site from your texts.

It also works for prominence, since links from other websites count, and those links need somewhere to point. Your profile has a place for it too: Google lets you provide a website that represents your individual business location.

Maps gets you seen. Your website is where people see your work and your prices and decide to call, and it’s the one page about your business you control. See whether a Google Business Profile is enough.

What if everything checks out and I’m still hard to find?

Then the work is steady, not a single fix. Keep your profile complete and your hours right, ask every customer for a review, and reply to them. Humfrid writes those replies for you to post. Make sure your name, address and phone number match everywhere you’re listed, starting with your own website. To keep it all matching, see how to update your business hours everywhere.

Text Humfrid your business name, and you’ll see your website within a day.
